Few engineers have the opportunity to see a graduate research project create a lasting impact where they live. For Garrett Thompson, a Water/Wastewater Civil Engineer in our Pocatello office, he’s experienced just that. From intern to licensed Professional Engineer to Bridge Hydraulics Group Lead, Garrett’s path has allowed him to pursue work he is truly passionate about, right here in his hometown. This month, we chatted with him about his journey with Keller, seeing a research project come to life, and how he finds fulfillment in improving his local community.
Can you share a little about your background and what led you to Keller?
I’ve always enjoyed building things and figuring out how they work, whether that meant playing with Legos as a kid, working on my truck, or tackling house projects. That curiosity led me towards civil engineering and a career focused on the infrastructure that supports communities.
I first joined Keller as an intern while earning my bachelor’s degree in civil and environmental engineering and later my master’s degree focusing on structural and water resources engineering. I was drawn to the variety of projects at Keller, hands-on problem-solving, and the opportunity to learn from experienced people while contributing to work with a meaningful local impact.
What’s your role, and what does a typical day look like for you?
My role covers a little bit of everything, from planning and design to construction observation and mentorship. No two days are the same. In addition to leading local water projects, my work focuses on bridge and transportation hydraulics, including permitting, 1-D and 2-D surface water modeling, and scour calculations and countermeasure design.
One of the most rewarding parts of my job is leading the Bridge Hydraulics Group, where I serve as both a technical resource and a team leader while helping develop the next generation of engineers.
What’s a fun fact about you that most people don’t know?
I’m a black belt in taekwondo, although it has been over 15 years since I’ve trained. Now I mostly use those skills to intimidate stubborn home projects. I also co-managed the Idaho State University craft shop, where I picked up woodworking, sewing, and pottery.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I like spending time with family and friends, getting outdoors, and working on projects around the house. Since buying my home, I’ve almost always had a project going, which sometimes turned into more than I expected. I also love camping and even built my own camp trailer from the ground up.
Can you share a memorable project from your time in this career?
My master’s thesis research involved modeling flows through historic oxbow bends in the Portneuf River in Pocatello that were cut off during railroad construction. The project focuses on reconnecting the river to its adjacent floodplain and historic oxbows to support wetland growth, recreation, and wildlife habitat. After I completed my thesis, the City of Pocatello pursued funding to move the effort from research into design. Keller teamed with another consulting firm and was selected for the project, which is currently underway.
It has been rewarding to see something that began as my thesis turn into a real-world project.
What’s the best advice you’ve received and how has it shaped your approach to work?
Take ownership of the work in front of you, even if you are not the final decision-maker. To me, that means doing the little things well, following through, and treating each task like it matters, because it does. That mindset has helped me be more intentional in my work, pay attention to details, and look for ways to help the team instead of just checking items off a list.
What do you appreciate most about your job or team?
I value the variety of work and the team environment. There is always something new to learn, and I appreciate being around people who are willing to share their experience, answer questions, and work through challenges together. It makes the work more enjoyable and helps me continue to grow.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
I’d pick the ability to control time. It would be nice to slow things down when deliverables are due, pause the weekend for a little more family time, or make a good day outdoors last just a bit longer.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Keller team and to keep learning from the people I work with. I’m looking forward to growing in this role, contributing where I can, and being involved in projects that make a difference for our clients and communities.
