The Veolia Water Idaho Whistle Pig Tank project that was designed by Keller Associates has won another award! This time for the ASCE Southern Idaho 2023 Project of the Year under $10M. This award honors projects and professionals that exemplify superior civil engineering skills and contribute significantly to the field and society.
Veolia serves 106,000 customers in Ada County, Idaho, and is the City of Boise’s largest water purveyor. To support the growing demands of the South Ada County service area, a new storage tank was needed for emergency and fire protection and to support operational and peak storage. The designed solution is a sustainable, 2.65-million-gallon concrete storage tank that will be a vital water supply source for residents and businesses for decades to come. The tank has fire flow reserves and key operational storage for both existing portions of Veolia’s water system and anticipated future needs. It will also alleviate dependence on aging wells in the area.
Keller served as the Prime Consultant, providing permitting, surveying, structural, site civil, mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and controls engineering services, as well as construction support and observation, for the entire project life cycle. Each stage of the project came with specific challenges and complexity, from permitting through final design and construction.
This project provides vital water supply to South Ada County residents and businesses while minimizing impacts to the Birds of Prey habitat. By working closely with stakeholders, engineering solutions can balance the need to provide sustainable water supply to developing communities while protecting the natural environment. This cost-effective, low-impact solution to an environmentally sensitive area has brought appreciation and recognition from residents, the Birds of Prey, and Veolia.
